APOLLONI, GIBOLAMO. - Josephite missionary, b. at Carrè (Vicenza) in 1865, d. on 20 Nov. 1932 in Rome. Among the best disciples of the theologian Murialdo, founder of the Pious Society of St. Joseph (Josephites), he was an educator of young people in Turin, Venice, and Vicenza, and in 1904 he went to Benghazi under the care of the Associazione Missionari Italiani to found a mission for the young Moors who were victims of the slave trade. The mission, located in the oasis of Fuchiat, took in more than fifty boys and twenty girls, and built schools, workshops, and gymnasiums. The consuls, especially the Italian one, collaborated with A. so that, under the international conventions, the Turkish government would issue them a certificate of freedom for the slaves who had managed to escape. A. also founded a clinic-dispensary, a Monte di pietà, and a sharecropping farm. Having returned to Italy (1911), until 1921 he was in charge in Rome of the parish of the Immacolata al Tiburtino. He was superior of the Pious Society, and then again parish priest of the same church until his death.
