ARMELLINI, MARIANO. - Benedictine of the Cassinese congregation, b. at Ancona on 10 Dec. 1662, d. at Foligno on 4 May 1737.
A monk in the monastery of S. Paolo in Rome, he was later abbot in the monasteries of Assisi and Foligno. Through his familiarity with Antonio Magliabechi, while he was in Florence to teach philosophy and theology there, and much more through the exhortations and the example of Prospero Mandosio, author of the Biblioteca Romana, he was led to compose the cycle of his historical works:
Biblioteca Benedictino-Casinensis, 2 vols., Assisi 1731-1732; (the letters V and Z have a new enumeration,
Appendix..., Foligno 1732); Catalogi tres episcoporum, reformatorum et virorum sanctitate illustrium e congregatione Casinensi, Assisi 1733 (the third catalogue, however, from the letter C onward was taken up again under the title: Continuatio catalogi virginum sanctitate illustrium..., Rome 1734); Additiones et correctiones Bibliothecae Benedectino-Casinensis, Foligno 1735, with an appendix of 20 pages: Appendix de quibusdam aliis per Italiam O. S. B. congregationum... vitis. Other works remained in manuscript.
Although the successive additions give a cumbersome appearance to this extensive collection of memoirs on the illustrious men of the Cassinese Congregation, from its origins (15th century) to the days of the author, its value is nonetheless notable both for its accuracy and for the number of notices often thus rescued from oblivion. Consultation is facilitated by various indexes, and the persons are listed under the name of the person.
