Astorini, Pietro Elia

ASTORINI, PIETRO ELIA. - Carmelite, b. in 1651, d. in 1702. Highly cultivated in philosophy and the Oriental languages, lively and open to new ideas, he was anti-Aristotelian. Accused of being too much an innovator and of practicing magic, he laid aside the habit and went over to the Protestants; but then, becoming disgusted with these as well, he returned to the bosom of the Roman Church. Received favorably, he was charged with teaching and preaching. He left many writings, both unpublished and published, among which are De potestate sanctae Sedis Apostolicae (Siena 1693), against Gallicanism, and De vera Ecclesia Iesu Christi (Naples 1700), against the Protestants.
