ATTIGNY-SUR-AISNE, COUNCILS OF. — Little is known of the First Council of A., save that it was held in 765 with the attendance of some thirty bishops. More details are available concerning the assembly of 822, in which Louis the Pious was reconciled with his three younger brothers and submitted to a public penance for having caused his nephew Bernard, King of Italy, to be blinded.
In 865, the dispute involving King Lothar was resolved, and he was compelled to dismiss his concubine Waldrada and take back his lawful wife Teutberga. Thirty bishops from ten provinces and six archbishops participated in the Council of 870, which was to judge Carloman, son of King Charles, for rebelling against his father. Found guilty, Carloman was imprisoned at Senlis. The Bishop of Laon, Incmarus, was required to pledge obedience and fidelity to King Charles and to his uncle Incmarus of Reims.
