ATTIGNY-SUR-AISNE, CONCILI d'. - Nothing in particular is known of the First Council of A., except that it was held in 765, with the participation of about thirty bishops. More details are available concerning the assembly held in 822, in which Ludovico il Pio was reconciled with his three young brothers and submitted to public penance for having had his nephew Bernardo, king of Italy, blinded.
In 865 the dispute concerning King Lotario was settled; he was obliged to leave his concubine Valdrada and take back his lawful wife Teutberga. Thirty bishops from ten provinces and six archbishops took part in the Council of 870, which was to judge Carlomanno, son of King Carlo, who had rebelled against his father. Found guilty, Carlomanno was imprisoned at Senlis. The bishop of Laon, Incmaro, was required to promise obedience and fidelity to King Carlo and to his uncle Incmaro of Reims.
