COUNCILS OF ATTIGNY-SUR-AISNE. - Nothing in particular is known of the First Council of A., except that it was held in 765, with the participation of about thirty bishops. More details are available about the assembly held in 822, at which Louis the Pious was reconciled with his three young brothers and submitted to a public penance for having had his nephew Bernard, king of Italy, blinded.

In 865 the dispute of King Lothair was resolved, as he had to leave his concubine Waldrada and take back his lawful wife Teutberga. Thirty bishops from ten provinces and six archbishops took part in the Council of 870, at which Carloman, son of King Charles, who had rebelled against his father, was to be judged. Found guilty, Carloman was imprisoned at Senlis. The bishop of Laon, Hincmar, had to promise obedience and fidelity to King Charles and to his uncle Hincmar of Reims.
