Bartolomeo of Urbino (Carusi)

BARTOLOMEO OF URBINO (CARUSI). - Augustinian theologian, disciple of Agostino Trionfo, whose D. P. Augustini Milleloquium veritatis (Lyons 1555) he completed and dedicated to Clement VI. The Pope wished to reward him by naming him bishop of Urbino (1347), where, shortly thereafter, he died in holiness (1350). He was a great friend of Petrarch. He taught theology in Paris and Bologna.

He knew almost all of St. Augustine by heart, and from his works he extracted a volume of Commentarii tam in Vetus quam in Novum Testamentum d. Augustini ex omnibus lucubrationibus collecti. These commentaries, however, were published under his own name by the plagiarist Giovanni Gast of Basel (Basel 1542). He took part in the struggle against Marsilius of Padua and William of Ockham, who attacked the pontifical authority, with two unpublished treatises: De Romani Pontificis, Christi Vicarii, auctoritate tractata contra errores quorundam, qui tempore Ludovici Bavariae ducis, contra Ecclesiam Christique Vicarium insurrexerunt and Libri Aegidii Romani de regimine principum. In this last work, which is an abridgment of the book of the same name by Giles of Rome, he defends the theory of the potestas directa of the Roman pontiff over the temporal power of princes.
