BENEDICT VI, Pope. - Son of Hildebrand, he was elected by the imperial faction shortly after the death of John XIII (6 Oct. 972), but was consecrated only on 19 Jan. 973, because the confirmation of Otto I, then in Germany, had to be awaited. After the latter's death (7 May 973), as Otto II found himself in difficulties, the Roman popular faction, led by Crescentius I (d. 984), set up against B. the Roman deacon Boniface Francone, who called himself Boniface VII (June 974). The latter shut B. up in Castel S. Angelo, and when the imperial envoy Sicco interceded for his release, he had the prisoner strangled (July 974). Few documents remain from B., and some are suspect, others false. He confirmed the privileges of the church of Trier (24 Jan. 973) and possessions to the monasteries of Subiaco (26 Nov. 973), Vézelay (28 Nov. 973) and S. Pietro di Rosas in Spain (Apr. 974). The letter sent to him by Pilgrim, bishop of Passau, asking for the restoration of the hierarchy in Hungary to the detriment of the metropolis of Salzburg, is suspect. Certainly false is B.'s favourable reply, as is the one opposed to the restoration, the first invented by Pilgrim, the second in the circle of Frederick, archbishop of Salzburg.
