BERNARDO degli UBERTI, saint. - Born into a noble Florentine family around 1060, in 1075 he became a Vallombrosan monk in the monastery of S. Salvi, and in 1098 was appointed general abbot of his Congregation; but in that same year Urban II summoned him to Rome as a cardinal. B. served the popes as vicar or legate in the missions entrusted to him in northern Italy; Pasquale II consecrated him bishop of Parma in November 1106; he remained constantly active in the field of Catholic reform. Histories of his Order and sermons are attributed to him, some of which may be found under the name of St Bernard of Clairvaux. B. died at Parma on 4 December 1133, and on 3 December 1139 his successor Lanfranco exposed his body for the veneration of the faithful, thereby proclaiming him a saint.
