BERNARD DEGLI UBERTI, Saint. - Born into a noble Florentine family around 1060, in 1075 he became a Vallombrosan monk in the monastery of S. Salvi, and in 1098 he was appointed abbot general of his Congregation; but in that same year Urban II summoned him to Rome as a cardinal. B. served the pontiffs as vicar or legate on the missions entrusted to him in northern Italy; Paschal II consecrated him bishop of Parma in Nov. 1106; he remained always active in the field of Catholic reform. Histories of his Order and sermons are attributed to him, some of which are perhaps circulating under the name of St. Bernard of Clairvaux. B. died at Parma on 4 Dec. 1133, and on 3 Dec. 1139 his successor Lanfranco exposed his body to the veneration of the faithful, thereby proclaiming him a saint.
