GIOSEPPE BERTIERI. — Augustinian bishop and theologian, born at Ceva in Piedmont on 9 November 1734, died at Pavia on 5 July 1804. He entered the religious life at the age of twenty and taught in various colleges of his Order. For twenty years he held the chair of theology at the University of Vienna. In 1789 he was elected Bishop of Como, and three years later was transferred to the see of Pavia, raised to the dignity of archbishop, and distinguished himself by his love of justice and zeal for the faith.
Principal works: *De Incarnatione, de legibus, de Sacramentis in genere et de Baptismo et Confirmatione in specie* (3 vols., Vienna 1771–74); *Theologiae dogmaticae in systema redactae pars altera* (ibid. 1778; Venice 1780; ibid. 1790). The first part of this work was published by the Dominican Pietro Gazzaniga, a colleague of B. in the theological chair.
