BONAVENTURA DA BARCELLONA, BEATO

BONAVENTURE DA BARCELONA, Blessed. - Before entering the Order of Friars Minor (1640) his name was Michele Battista Gran; he was born at Riudoms in the province and diocese of Tarragona on 24 Nov. 1620. Coming to Italy in 1658, he added to his name the appellation "da Barcellona." Following the example of his homeland and also of other regions of Italy, he established austere Franciscan houses of retreat in Latium; thus in 1662 he founded at Ponticelli Sabina a retreat convent with statutes approved by Pope Alexander VII, which was soon followed by two others at Montorio Romano and at Vicovaro, and finally by that of St. Bonaventure on the Palatine (Rome), where he died on 11 Sept. 1684. His reform, called the "Riformella," to which St. Leonard of Port Maurice belonged, lasted until the merger of 1897. He was beatified by Pius X in 1906.
