BONO, Giovanni, Blessed. - Born of a noble family in Mantua in 1168. After a dissipated youth, enlightened by divine grace, following an illness, he returned to God.

Having withdrawn to the foot of the Emilian Apennines, near Cesena, he led a life devoted to prayer and penance. He founded a congregation of hermits, called Giamboniti (v. EREMITANI DI S. AGOSTINO), which soon spread through Lombardy, Romagna, and the Veneto. Bulls of Gregory IX of 1230 and 1240 attest that it adopted the so-called rule of St. Augustine.

The Blessed died on 23 Oct. 1249, and two years later, by commission of Innocent IV, the bishop of Modena instituted there (1251-53) and at Cesena (1253-54) the processes concerning his life and his virtues. But no further steps were taken, with the exception of the translation of the body that took place in 1251. The Giamboniti, together with other Augustinian eremitical congregations, constituted the "Unio magna," ordained by Alexander IV with the bull Licet Ecclesiae Catholicae of 4 May of the same year, from which there then originated the Order of the Hermits of St. Augustine, of which Lanfranco Settale was named prior general.
