BRACCI, PIETRO. – Sculptor and architect, born in Rome on 16 July 1700, died there on 13 February 1773. He was perhaps a pupil of C. Rusconi and carried out his activity mainly in Rome. Among his most important works are: the statue of Religion and that of the Pontiff in the tomb of Benedict XIII in S. Maria sopra Minerva; the monument to Maria Clementina Sobieski in St Peter’s, characteristically eighteenth-century; the monument to Benedict XIV also in St Peter’s, where the statue of Disinteresse is by Gaspare Sibilia.
The B., who only partially adhered to the peculiar tendencies of the century, represents the persistence of the Baroque tradition in eighteenth-century Rome. He possessed great skill as a portraitist (statue of Clement XII in the museum of Ravenna).
