BRANCHEREAU, LOUIS. - French priest, b. at S. Pierre di Montlimart (Vendée) on 21 Dec. 1819, d. at Issy on 23 Dec. 1913. He entered St. Sulpice in 1841, taught philosophy at the seminary of Clermont and in 1850 published the Praelectiones philosophiae in 9 small volumes, openly professing ontologism therein (cf. [J. Kleutgen], Dell'ontologismo, in La Civiltà Cattolica, 6th series, XI [1867, III], pp. 574-79). Superior of the seminary of Nantes (1854) and of that of Orléans (1870), he was a friend of Msgr. Dupanloup, of whom he was the universal heir. He also published: Politesse et convenances ecclésiastiques (Paris 1872, Italian trans., Turin 1916); Vie de M. Hamon (2nd ed., Paris 1877); Méditations à l'usage des élèves des grands séminaires (4 vols., ibid. 1890, Italian trans. Brescia 1937); La vocation sacerdotale, (Paris 1896); Le Journal intime de Mgr Dupanloup, (ibid. 1903).
