BRUNNER, ANDREAS. - German Jesuit and historian, b. at Hall (Tyrol) on 30 Nov. 1589, d. at Innsbruck on 20 Apr. 1650. He entered the Society in 1605, and in 1622 became director of the famous Marian Congregation of Munich and historiographer of the Bavarian court. Of the great and esteemed work of the "Bavarian Livy," Annales virtutis et fortunae Boiorum, only the first three volumes could be printed (Munich 1626-37), containing the history of Bavaria from 600 B.C. to 1314 A.D.; Leibniz arranged a reprint of it in 1670. In the years 1632-35, B. was one of the 42 hostages of Munich, held at Augsburg by the Swedes of Gustavus Adolphus; with great strength of mind, he was their defender. Sent in 1637 to Innsbruck, he devoted himself entirely to the care of souls. An interesting form of his apostolate are the spiritual dramas in popular form in German: Dramata sacra, oder Herzrührende Schaubihne, Salzburg 1684.
