BRUNENGO, GIUSEPPE. - Jesuit, b. 12 Jan. 1821 at Piverone (Turin), d. at Rome on 11 Nov. 1891. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1835 and, because of the revolution of 1848, went to the United States, where he taught philosophy at Worcester; having returned to Italy, he was a writer for La Civiltà Cattolica from 1854 until his death. His numerous articles deal chiefly with Sacred Scripture, the primacy of the Pope, and the history of the Papal States. Among his writings published in volumes, the following should be noted: Le origini della sovranità dei Papi (Prato 1862), Il patriziato romano di Carlo Magno (there, 1864-66); I destini di Roma (4 vols., Turin 1874-77); as well as L'impero di Babilonia e di Ninive..., secondo i monumenti cuneiformi comparati con la Bibbia (2 vols., Prato 1885). He also wrote the historical part of the book (chiefly due to Fr. Greglia) Il Papato, l'Impero e il Regno d'Italia (Rome 1861), against the work of the same title by Liverani.
