BRUNENGO, GIUSEPPE. - Jesuit, born 12 Jan. 1821 at Piverone (Turin), died at Rome 11 Nov. 1891. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1835 and, because of the revolution of 1848, went to the United States where he taught philosophy at Worcester. Returning to Italy, he became a writer for *La Civiltà Cattolica* from 1854 until his death. His numerous articles dealt chiefly with Holy Scripture, the primacy of the Pope, and the history of the Papal States. Among his works published in book form are: *Le origini della sovranità dei Papi* (Prato 1862), *Il patriziano romano di Carlo Magno* (ibid., 1864–66), *I destini di Roma* (4 vols., Turin 1874–77), and *L'Impero di Babilonia e di Ninive... secondo i monumenti euforiani comparati con la Bibbia* (2 vols., Prato 1885). He also authored the historical section of the book (mainly by Fr. Oreglia) *Il Papato, l'Impero e il Regno d'Italia* (Rome 1861), which was a rebuttal to the work of the same title by Liverani.
