CARABELLI. - Family of sculptors and stucco workers from Ticino, natives of Obino near Mendrisio. Very active between the 17th and 19th centuries, also abroad, especially in Austria.

The most notable are: ANTONIO, b. in 1648, d. in 1694, a stucco worker who in 1689 took part in the decoration of the Theatine church in Salzburg. DONATO, b. in 1760, d. in 1839, worked in England and then, after 1789, executed numerous statues and reliefs for the facade of the cathedral of Milan. FRANCESCO, b. at Castel S. Pietro (Mendrisio) in 1757, d. in 1798, a pupil of his father Giovanni Albino and then of C. M. Giudici in Milan. There he acquired some renown as a portraitist and worked on many statues for the cathedral and the palaces of Milan. A Madonna and Child in the cathedral of Monza is his. He also executed sculptures for the park of Schwetzingen in Germany. GIOVANNI ALBINO, b. at Castel S. Pietro (Mendrisio) in 1689, d. in 1760, studied in Rome, whence he sent works to Portugal in the times of King John V. He also did notable works for the churches of his native town.
