ECCLESIASTICAL BOARDING SCHOOL of TORINO. - An institution for the formation of the Turin and subalpine clergy, where young priests (enrolment is compulsory for those of the archdiocese), before beginning their apostolic life, devote two years to the practical study of moral and pastoral theology. The idea of establishing a house in which to gather the young priests who, from 1738 onward, were required for three years to attend “conferences” in practical moral theology either at the university or at the seminary, had already been considered by various archbishops of Torino, but without result; after the monarchical restoration (1814), the servant of God Pio Brunone Lanteri, together with the theologian Luigi Guala, devised a project in this regard, but neither could he bring it to completion (1816-17). Guala succeeded in his stead, and in November 1817 was finally able to open the much-desired c. Its seat until 1870 was in the former convent of S. Francesco d'Assisi; from 1870 to the present day it has been located at the sanctuary of the Consolata. The c. attained its greatest splendour under the direction of s. Giuseppe Cafasso. After a period of suppression, it was reconstituted by the servant of God G. Allamano.
