GARELLI, STANISLAO. - Priest, b. in Torino on 18 Sept. 1817, d. in Buttigliera on 19 May 1899. Having received Holy Orders on 13 June 1840, he was appointed the following year prefect of the clergy at the Convitto of S. Maria in Torino, then royal almoner and shortly afterwards canon of that Cathedral (1845). Offered by Carlo Alberto the appointment as bishop of Fossano, he declined the honour, continuing in his duties at court.
The devout address of homage which, together with two other Turin canons, he sent to Pio IX, grieved by the re-
volt of the Romagne (1859), caused much stir in the press. The Minister of the Interior, Farini, demanded its retraction or his resignation, and G. lost his office of almoner on 10 May 1860, while continuing always to enjoy the highest esteem of Vittorio Emanuele II, who indeed sent him to Rome to the Pope, first to request absolution from the censures incurred through the occupation of the Romagne and the renunciation of papal sovereignty over that territory, and then a second time in 1871 on a special mission. G. was also on excellent terms with Umberto I, who awarded him the commendatory rank of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. Designated by Pio IX in 1870 for the episcopal see of Susa, he again refused and continued to devote all his activity to charitable works.
