GAYRAUD, HIPPOLYTE. - Theologian and politician, b. at Lovit (Tarn-et-Garonne) in 1856, d. at Bourg-la-Reine on 17 Dec. 1911. A Dominican in 1877, he taught theology and philosophy simultaneously at the College of his Order and at the Catholic Institute of Toulouse. Having obtained from the Pope permission to leave the Dominican habit, he abandoned teaching in 1893 in order to devote himself entirely to politics and social propaganda. He was in fact a deputy for the constituency of Brest, occupying the seat left vacant by the death of Msgr. d'Hulst; subsequently he was re-elected several times. He fought strenuously against the separation of Church and State, often imposing his views on the anticlericals.
Among his many works the following are notable: Thomisme et malinisme, I: Réplique au r. p. de Rignon (Toulouse 1880); Procédence et libre arbitre selon si Thomas d'Aquin (ibid. 1892); Si Thomas et le prédéterminisme (Paris 1895); L'antichristisme de si Thomas d'Aquin (ibid. 1896); Les démocrates chrétiens (ibid. 1899); La Foi devant la raison (ibid. 1906). He collaborated assiduously with the Revue du clergé français and the Revue de philosophie.
