VICTOR AND CORONA, Saints, Martyrs. - They are commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on 14 May as martyrs of Egypt.

Their names, however, appear again on other days and with other topographical indications. Besides Egypt, they have been assigned to Syria, to several cities of Italy (Otricoli, Feltre, Osimo), and to Sicily. The Passio preserved in various Latin, Greek and Oriental recensions (BHL, 8559-8563; Suppl. 8583 b-d; BHG, 1864-65; BHO, 1242-44) is highly legendary. Victor was a soldier at the time of Antoninus Pius; arrested and subjected to harsh torments, he was finally beheaded; Corona, the young wife of another soldier, witnessing Victor's trial, encouraged him to resist; she was therefore condemned and, bound to two palm trees, torn in two.
