Diocese of Corrientes
Corrientes is a city in the Argentine Republic, the capital of the province of the same name. It is situated 37 km south of the confluence of the Paraná and Paraguay rivers. It was founded on April 3, 1588 by F. Vera y Aragón, who named it San Juan de Vera de las Siete Corrientes.
The diocese was erected by Pius X on February 3, 1910; it covers an area of 119,332 km² and has a population of 800,000, of whom 650,000 are Catholic. It comprises 39 parishes, with 217 churches, served by 91 diocesan priests and 42 regular clergy; it has a seminary (1948). The church, now the cathedral, dedicated to the Finding of the Holy Cross, was built with offerings from the population; other notable churches are those of Our Lady of Mercy, St. Francis, and the Holy Cross. There is a thriving Italian community in the diocese.
