COUSIN, Jean, the Elder. - French painter, woodcut artist, sculptor: b. ca. 1490 at Sens (?), d. at Paris ca. 1561. From 1538 he is recorded at Paris.
Little remains of his activity at Sens. He worked in the style of the school of Fontainebleau and was influenced by the Italian mannerists, such as Parmigianino; he made designs for tapestries in the cathedrals of Sens and Langres. He sculpted the tomb of Admiral Chabot, today in the Louvre.
More famous is his son, JEAN C. the YOUNGER, painter, sculptor, engraver, b. at Sens ca. 1522, d. at Paris ca. 1594, author of a book on anatomy entitled De portraicture, which was first published in 1560. He is recorded at Paris from 1538. The painting of the Last Judgment in the Louvre shows him under the influence of Raphael and of the later works of Michelangelo. In 1585 he designed stained-glass windows for the church of St-Gervais in Paris.
