CRISOGONO, saint. — Martyr, commemorated on 24 November. His history, according to the Passio, is linked with that of St. Anastasia. C. was neither Roman nor from Sirmium, but from Aquileia. Indeed, in order to connect itself with the element of martyrdom, the Passio must declare that he was beheaded at Aquas Gradatas, near Aquileia. His body was thrown into the estate at Saltus (BHL, 1795; H. Delehaye, Etude sur le légendier romain, Bruxelles 1936, pp. 151–52; Martyr. Hieronymianum, pp. 618–19).
It is possible that this C. was, as P. Paschini thought (La Chiesa aquileiese e il periodo delle origini [Udine 1919, p. 60]), followed by F. Lanzoni (p. 870), the bishop of Aquileia who preceded Teodoro, and thus died no later than 314. But the holder of the titulus Chrysogoni in Rome must originally have been quite distinct and only subsequently assimilated to the Aquileian one. The archaeological stratification of this title shows us a warehouse or a house that was certainly not a patriotic establishment of the popular Trastevere district. The name of the «conditor tituli» most probably points to one of the many Orientals who lived in the area. The title appears in the conciliar subscriptions of 499 and 595. It was associated with the cemetery of S. Pancrazio. At first it was housed in a single-aisled room. It then underwent various transformations, perhaps in the 5th century. It was provided with a confession. It contained important paintings (layers from the 8th to the 10th century). In 1123 the imposing new church was built at a higher level. — Vedi tsv. LV.
