CZĘSTOCHOWA, diocese of - The "Black Madonna" painted on three linden-wood panels: the studies carried out on the occasion of the restoration of 1925-26 seem to attribute it to an unknown Italian (early 14th century). The icon was photographed without its silver covering.
CZĘSTOCHOWA, DIOCESE OF. - In Poland, erected on 28 Oct. 1925. Suffragan of Kraków. First bishop: Teodor Kubina.
Area 9,443 sq km, population 1,028,000, of whom Catholics 1,016,000. Parishes: 215. Churches 304, of which parochial: 215; convents 8; chapels 29; diocesan priests 354, of whom bishops: 2; parish priests and administrators 201; curates 67; catechists 21. Priests of other dioceses 5. Regular priests 57. Religious women 500. Seminarians 94. Religious houses: male, 12; female, 54. Institutes of instruction and education: male, 1; female, 5. Institutions of charity, assistance and care: 16. Churches destroyed 9; damaged 14; closed forever 93. Pilgrimage centers: Jasna Góra (Bright Mount), the principal sanctuary of all Poland, where the image of the Black Virgin is venerated, said to be by St. Luke, brought in 1382 by Ladislaus of Opole from Belz (Red Russia) to Częstochowa, to the convent of the Pauline Fathers, who came in the same year from Hungary. The veneration of the Madonna is also linked with the so-called "Deluge" of the Swedish Protestant forces in 1655, from which it saved Poland. The church of the convent of the Pauline Fathers is of the 17th century. The chapel of the image was founded by the primate Maciej Łubiński in 1644. Other pilgrimage centers: Gidle, św. Anna, Leśniów.
