DIANA, ANTONIO. - Theatine, b. in Palermo in 1585, d. in Rome on 20 July 1663. He is among the best-known moral theologians, although tending toward laxism (St. Alphonsus, Theologia moralis, VI, 257: ed. L. Gaudé, III, Rome 1909, p. 242). He lived predominantly in Rome, where he was examiner of bishops under three popes.

His capital work is the Resolutiones morales (Lyons 1629-59), very disordered; rearranged under the title A. D. coordinatus, they were published at Lyons (1667). It drew 28,000 questions, reduced in successive editions down to the brief compendia that go under the name Summariens summae Dianae (Venice 1648 etc.).

Another work: De primatus solius b. Petri (Rome 1647). In posthumous apologies an attempt was made to clear him of laxism (anon., Antonius D., dogmaticus, Naples 1697, with an apologia), but against this stand, among other things, his relations with Caramuel (Bibl. Vaticana, Cod. Vat. lat. 10446, ff. 227-232).
