DIANA D'ANDALÒ, Blessed. - Dominican, b. ca. 1200, d. at Bologna on 10(?) June 1236. Daughter of Andrea (Andalò) and niece of Pietro Lovello, D. attended from 1218-19 the preaching of the Dominicans at Bologna, knew St. Dominic, into whose hands she made a vow, probably to become a nun. The bishop refused the foundation of the monastery in the vicinity of Bologna. On 22 July 1221 D. took refuge at the monastery of the Canonesses of Ronzano, whence her relatives abducted her, causing in the scuffle the breaking of one of her ribs. St. Dominic wrote her some letters. Again at Ronzano (Nov. 1222-June 1223), D. together with 4 other nuns received the habit on 29 June 1223, from the bl. Jordan of Saxony at St. Agnes of Bologna. In her foundation D. was never prioress, but spiritual mother among 50 nuns. From 1222 to 1235 runs the precious correspondence of Jordan to D. The letters of D. are lost. Leo XIII confirmed in 1891 the cult of D. together with that of Cecilia and Amata of the same monastery.
