Dietenberger, IOHANN. - Dominican theologian and polemicist, b. at Frankfurt am Main in 1475, d. at Mainz on 4 Sept. 1537. Having earned his doctorate in theology at Mainz (1515), he served twice as prior at Frankfurt (1516-17 and 1520), regent of the Dominican Studium at Trier (1518), prior at Koblenz (1526), professor at the University of Mainz (1532), and finally inquisitor in the dioceses of Mainz and Cologne.
He was among the theologians who compiled the *Confutatio Confessionis Augustanae*. He wrote several polemical works against Luther, including the notable *De votis monasticis contra temerarium M. Lutherii de iis iudicium* (Cologne 1524). His German translation of the Bible (Mainz 1534) became widely known, with about a hundred editions.
