DIETENBERGER, IOHANN. – Dominican theologian and polemicist, b. in Frankfurt am Main in 1475, d. in Mainz on 4 September 1537. He was awarded a doctorate in theology at Mainz (1515), was twice prior at Frankfurt (1516–17 and 1520), regent of the Dominican Studium at Trier (1518), prior at Koblenz (1526), professor at the University of Mainz (1532), and finally inquisitor in the dioceses of Mainz and Cologne.
He was one of the theologians who filled out the « Refutation of the Augsburg Confession ». He wrote various polemical works against Luther, among which the following should be mentioned: De votis monasticis contra temerarium M. Lutherii de iis iudicium (Cologne 1524). His German translation of the Bible (Mainz 1534), which went through about a hundred editions, is very well known.
