DIETENBERGER, JOHANN. - Dominican theologian and polemicist, b. in Frankfurt am Main in 1475, d. in Mainz on 4 Sept. 1537. Having been awarded a doctorate in theology at Mainz (1515), he was twice prior at Frankfurt (1516-17 and 1520), regent of the Dominican Studium of Trier (1518), prior at Koblenz (1526), professor at the University of Mainz (1532) and finally inquisitor in the dioceses of Mainz and Cologne.

He was one of the theologians who compiled the "Confutation of the Augsburg Confession." He wrote various polemical works against Luther, among which should be remembered: De votis monasticis contra temerarium M. Lutherii de iis iudicium (Cologne 1524). His translation of the Bible into German (Mainz 1534) is very well known, and it had about a hundred editions.
