DOMINIC of FLANDERS. - Dominican philosopher and writer, b. at Merris (or Merville), diocese of Thérouanne (northern France) around 1425, d. at Florence on 16 July 1479. He studied in Paris, where he then taught philosophy with considerable renown. On 7 September 1461 he entered the Dominican Order in Bologna, then the center of the reformed Congregation of Lombardy. He was a professor for several years at Bologna (1462-1470) and at Florence (1471-72). At the wish of Lorenzo de' Medici he taught physics in the new Academy of Pisa (1472-73); finally from 1478 he was regent in the Dominican Studium of Florence, where he died of plague.
He left many books on logic, natural philosophy, metaphysics and moral philosophy. The following are preserved: Quaestiones quodlibetales (Venice 1500); Quaestiones super commentaria s. Thomae in libros posteriorum analiticarum Aristotelis (ibid. 1507, 1526, 1548, 1587, 1600); Expositio super fallacis s. Thomae de Aquino (published together with the preceding); Tractatus de suppositionibus (Oxford, Bodleian Library, ms. A. 370); Expositio super libros de anima (Venice, no date, republished several times); Summa divinae philosophiae (ibid. 1409; Cologne 1621; Bologna 1622).
