DOXOLOGY. - A Greek word, from δόξα = glory and λόγος = discourse, which denotes a liturgical formula for glorifying either God (as often happens in Sacred Scripture and with a phrase that almost always contains the word δόξα) or Christ (and this in the most varied forms recurring frequently throughout early Christian literature [Rom. 9:5; Rev. 5:12 etc.]), or the Most Holy Trinity (and among these one distinguishes the lesser d., or Gloria Patri, which already in the 4th century was added at the end of the Psalms, the greater d., or Gloria in excelsis of the Mass, and the d. of the final stanzas of hymns).
Often the d. is nothing but the versified paraphrase of the Gloria Patri; at other times it has the form of a supplication, according to what has been asked in the course of the hymn. Many times the conclusion is proper, since the d. is tied to the particular content of the hymn, which happens, for example, in Paschal time.
The feasts of Christ have a d. of a special Christological-Trinitarian form, inasmuch as it recalls the event commemorated and then makes mention of the other two persons of the Trinity. At times, moreover, the d. is exclusively Christological. The proper d. is used in the hymns of the same meter at all the hours on feast days and within the octave.
