DRAGONETTI, LUIGI. - Patriot and politician, b. at Aquila on 1 Oct. 1791, d. there on 21 Feb. 1871. A deputy in the Neapolitan Parliament, he was subsequently appointed by Ferdinand II as inspector of places of punishment (1831), contributing effectively to the improvement of the old punitive systems.
Accused of having taken part in the Aquila uprising of 1841, although acquitted by the military tribunal, he was relegated to Montecassino, where he became a faithful and beloved friend of Abbot Tosti. Freed in 1846, he settled in Rome, and there founded several liberal periodicals. On his return to Naples (1848), he was for some time Minister of Foreign Affairs. Arrested the following year on a false charge, he was held in prison for four years. Having left Italy (1852), he was able to return to Naples, after a long period of exile, only following the fall of the Bourbons. In 1861 he was appointed senator of the new Kingdom of Italy. (Aquila 1868), in which, in heartfelt and noble pages, he had occasion to express all his disappointment and all his sorrow over the fierce struggle that the new Italy was waging, in the name of a badly understood liberty and love of country, against the religion of his forefathers and against the Church and the papacy.
