EGIDIO di LESSINES. - Dominican master and one of the earliest supporters of s. Tommaso, born at Lessines (Belgium) around 1230; died around 1304. In the condemnation of Averroism in 1270, he discerned the threat hanging over Thomist doctrine and wrote of it to Alberto Magno, who replied to him with the De XV problematibus (ed. Mandonnet, in Siger de Brabant, II, 2nd ed., Lovanio 1911).
He wrote: De sauris, ed. among the opuscula of s. Tommaso, Tractatus de praeceptis, De crepusculis, De concordia temporum. His Thomism is connected with the De unitate formae, written in 1278 against R. Kilwardby, who from his see of Canterbury had renewed the Parisian condemnations of 1277 (ed. M. De Wulf [Les philosophes belges, 1], Lovanio 1901).
