EUTHYMIUS I, Patriarch of Constantinople. - B. around 834 at Seleucia (Isauria), d. in exile on 5 Aug. 917. A monk, he was confessor of the emperor Leo VI, with whose help he founded the monastery of Psammathia at Constantinople; he always preserved a dignified character even before his sovereign. As patriarch of Constantinople (907-12), he was in concord with the Roman See in the matter of the fourth marriage of Leo VI; but when the latter died, he was deposed by his successor, his brother Alexander; he was also opposed by Nicholas the Mystic during his second patriarchate (912-25). Then began the dissension of the Euthymians, which lasted until the end of the 10th century. E. is the author of 4 Marian homilies. His life has been well described by one of his disciples. He is venerated by the Byzantine Church as a saint.
