FOGAZZARO, GIUSEPPE. - Priest and educationist, b. at Bergamo on 6 Nov. 1813, d. at Vicenza on 16 Aug. 1901. Ordained in 1836, he devoted himself to education, opening in 1839 a nursery school at Vicenza, where a little later he created a mutual aid society among the diocesan priests.
A canon, professor in the Vicentine Seminary, and member of the civic commission of public charity, he distinguished himself in 1848 by taking part in that provisional committee which assumed the administration of the city, safeguarding it from the horrors of war. Exiled after the return of the Austrians, he went to Rome, to Florence and to Valsesia; having returned to Vicenza, he suffered Habsburg persecutions, continuing his life as an educator and benefactor. Once Venetia was liberated in 1866, he held public offices in the Vicentine schools, and was the object of the moved esteem of his fellow citizens until his death, which followed at the very advanced age of 88. His nephew Antonio portrayed him in the Don Giuseppe Flores of his Piccolo mondo moderno.
