GABELUS (Gr. Gabaēlós, «Ecciso è Dio», According to Hebrew). - A relative and a punctual debtor, according to the Vulgate, of Tobit. In the Greek text (Tob. 4:20; Vulg. 4:21) he is called the brother of Gabrias or Gabri.

While Tobit was in Nineveh, G. lived in Media, in the small town of Rages.

In the Latin recension of the book of Tobit it is stated that Rages, identified with the ruins of Rai, 15 km. from Tehran, was situated on the mountains of Ecbatana; in the Sinaitic codex it is specified that it was days of journey distant from this city (Tob. 5, 6; Vulg. 5, 8). G. not only returns the large sum (from the Greek text of Tob. 9, 5 it appears that it was a deposit) to Raphael under the guise of Azariah, but also joyfully accompanies him to attend the wedding of his relative Tobit, son of Tobit, with Sarah, daughter of Raguel (Tob. 9, 6 and following).
