GABELO (Gr. Γαβαήλος, “God is slain,” according to the Hebrew). - A relative and punctual debtor, according to the Vulgate, of Tobias. In the Greek text (Tob. 4, 20; Vulg. 4, 21) he is called the brother of Gabria or Gabri.

While Tobia was in Nineveh, G. lived in Media, in the town of Rages.
In the Latin recension of the book of Tobia it is stated that Rages, identified with the ruins of Rai, 15 km. from Teheran, was situated in the mountains of Echatana; in the smuitic codex it is specified that it was days’ journey from this city (Tob. 5, 6; Volg. 5, 8). G. not only restores the large sum (from the Greek text of Tob. 9, 5 it appears that it was a deposit) to Raffaele in the guise of Azaria, but also gladly accompanies him in order to attend the wedding of his kinsman Tobia, son of Tobia, to Sara, daughter of Raguelle (Tob. 9, 6 agg.).
