GALANTINI, IPPOLITO, blessed. - Born in Firenze on 12 October 1565 into a humble family, he was a weaver and remained a layman throughout his life, although he educated himself in the sacred sciences and engaged in religious apostolate; after reforming various associations and confraternities, he founded a new congregation known as that of S. Francesco della dottrina cristiana (1602), whose members came to be called “Vanchetoni.” Despite the opposition he encountered, he spread his work beyond Firenze as well, to Lucca, Parma, Modena, and Perugia; he gave it a precise rule, placing great emphasis on spiritual practices. G. also performed many prodigious acts and wrote ascetic treatises for various converts and unbelievers; he died in Firenze on 20 March 1619, having always been in poor health; he was beatified by Leone XII on 19 June 1825.
