GALANTINI, Ippolito, Blessed. - Born in Florence on 12 Oct. 1565 to a family of the common people, he was a weaver and remained a layman all his life, though he instructed himself in the sacred sciences and devoted himself to religious apostolate; after reforming various companies and confraternities, he founded a new congregation called that of St. Francis of Christian Doctrine (1602), whose members were called "Vanchetoni." Despite the opposition he encountered, he spread his work also outside Florence, to Lucca, Parma, Modena, and Perugia, and gave it a precise rule, insisting greatly on spiritual practices. G. also performed many wondrous acts, wrote ascetic treatises, and converted various unbelievers; he died in Florence on 20 March 1619 after having always been sickly; he was beatified by Leo XII on 19 June 1825. Feast day on 20 March.
