JOHN OF BURGUNDY. - Spanish painter, recorded in documents from 1495 to 1533, d. before 1544. Italian by training, perhaps a pupil of Ghirlandaio, he executed with others the frescoes of the transept of the cathedral of Toledo (1495-96), where he worked again in 1502 and in 1508-10, executing, again in collaboration, the paintings of the chapel altar.

From 1514 is the commemorative fresco of the occupation of Oran by Card. Ximenez. Contemporary are some scenes from the life of Mary and events of the New Testament, executed with light and festive colors, of ample and sure drawing, despite a certain harshness in the characterization of the figures and in the execution of the draperies. From the same years are the famous portraits of the archbishops of Toledo. Other works by G. of B. are the frescoes of the Library, likewise in Toledo, the decoration of the hall of the University of Alcalá de Henares, and the altarpiece of the cathedral of Avila, considered among the masterpieces of Spanish painting of the early sixteenth century.
