GIOVANNI di BOROGONA. - Spanish painter, documented from 1495 to 1533, d. before 1544. Italian-trained, perhaps a pupil of Ghirlandaio, he executed, together with others, the frescoes in the transept of Toledo Cathedral (1495–96), where he worked again in 1502 and in 1508–10, carrying out, always in collaboration, the paintings for the chapel altar.
The celebratory fresco of the occupation of Oran by Card. Ximenez dates from 1514. Contemporary with it are several scenes from the life of Mary and events of the New Testament, executed in bright and festive colours, with broad and assured design, despite a certain harshness in the characterization of types and in the rendering of draperies. From the same years are the famous portraits of the archbishops of Toledo. Other works by G. di B. are the frescoes in the Library, also in Toledo, the decoration of the hall of the University of Alcalá de Henares, and the altarpiece of Avila Cathedral, regarded among the masterpieces of early sixteenth-century Spanish painting.
