GLAGOLITIC, SCRIPT. - A uncial alphabet, quite complicated, comprising 38 letters, composed by St. Cyril in the second half of the 9th century and used by him for the translation of Holy Scripture and of the liturgy into the Old Slavic language during his mission in Great Moravia. His disciples brought Glagolitic script to the Balkans, where two types were formed, the round one in Bulgaria (Macedonia) and the square one in Croatia.
In Macedonia, Glagolitic script in the 10th-12th centuries reached its highest graphic perfection, but it was progressively replaced by the Cyrillic script. In Croatia, from the square uncial type there developed the semi-uncial Glagolitic script and, from the 16th century, also the cursive. The semi-uncial also passed into printed books from 1483, both in the Old Slavic and in the Croatian language. Glagolitic script disappeared from civil use in the first half of the 19th century; in liturgical books it is today increasingly replaced by Latin characters. Numerous manuscripts in Glagolitic script have been preserved, beginning from the 10th century.
