GORCUM, MARTYRS of - A group of 19 religious and secular priests who fell into the hands of the Calvinists (the Sea Beggars) at the capture of the city of G. (Holland), on 26 June 1572.
They are: 11 Franciscans, of whom 9 were priests: Nicola Pieck, guardian, Jerome of Weerden, Theodoric of Emden, Nicasius Johnson, Willehald the Dane, Godfrey of Merville, Anthony of Weerden, Anthony of Hoomaer, Francis Rhodes, and 2 lay brothers: Peter of Asche and Cornelius of Wich; 2 Premonstratensians: Adrian of Hilvarenbeek and John Lacopa; 1 Dominican: John of Cologne; 1 Augustinian: John of Oesterwych; 4 secular priests: Leonard Wechel, parish priest, of G. and his vicar Nicola Poppel, Godfrey of Duynen, Andrew Wouters. Imprisoned and tortured, they defended the real presence in the Eucharist and the primacy of the pope. Taken to Iriel, they were hanged there on 9 July 1572. Beatified by Clement X in 1675, they were canonized by Pius IX on 29 June 1867. Feast on 9 July.
