ANNO, Saint. - Archbishop of Cologne, b. ca. 1010 in Swabia, d. 4 December 1075. He became provost of the canons at Goslar and in 1056 archbishop of Cologne. He was regent, together with the widowed queen, for the minor hereditary prince Henry (IV), but in 1062 he seized the latter, and governed Germany until 1063, when he had to yield before the famous Adalbert of Hamburg. Although of an impetuous character, he had great merits for the kingdom and also for the Church, administering his diocese excellently and founding several abbeys (the famous one of Siegburg); and he is praiseworthy above all for his loyal attitude toward Alexander II (1061-73) in the latter's critical struggle with the antipope Cadalus of Parma and the emperor Henry IV. Around 1100 he was glorified in the famous Song of A. (in MGH, Deutsche Chroniken, I, II, pp. 63-132; see the following entry).
