LEX ROMANA CANONICE COMPTA. - A collection of canonical and Roman texts, contained in cod. Paris. 12448, 10th century. It is composed of decretals, canons of councils, texts from the Registrum of Gregory I and from the Commonitorium of this Pontiff. The Roman texts that form part of it are drawn from the Justinianic Institutes, from the Code and from the Epitome Iuliani, with the oldest scholia on Julian.
The sanctio pragmatica pro petitione Vigilii is reported therein. There is also a part derived from the Capitulare italicum of Lothair of 825. The Roman texts adduced bear mention of their provenance; for the Code the wording recurs: ex libro codicum. The collection is provided with glosses. The chapters deal successively with clerics (1-168), with laymen (169-308) and with penal discipline in ecclesiastical matters (309-24). The content and purpose of the work are revealed by the incipit of the collection, which says: « Incipiunt cum sententiis suis Capitula Romanae legis ad canones pertinentia ».
The homeland of the collection, having regard also to its content, is held by many to be Ravenna, and the period is to be assigned to the 9th century, also because of the relation that the Collectio Anselmo dicata has with it; but recently the hypothesis has been put forward that the place of redaction was Pavia or in any case a city of Lombardy.
