MANGENOT, JOSEPH-EUGÈNE. - Exegete, b. at Gémonville (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France) on 28 Aug. 1856, d. at Moutrot on 19 March 1922. After completing his studies in the diocesan seminaries, he was ordained a priest on 17 July 1881, and from 1883 he was professor of Sacred Scripture and philosophy at the Seminary of Nancy. From 1901 until his death he was director of the DThC founded by A. Vacant (v.); he wrote many articles there. In 1903 he succeeded F. Vigouroux (v.) in the chair of Old Testament at the Institut catholique of Paris; from 1905 until his death he held there the chair of New Testament, succeeding L. Cl. Fillion (v.).
From 1885 he was a canon of the cathedral of Nancy; from 1903 a consultor of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. His balanced judgment, his attachment to the Church, his vast culture, and his diligence in investigating sources and details are praised.
Among his works are to be remembered (besides some writings on local history): L'authenticité mosaïque du Pentateuque (Paris 1907); La Résurrection de Jésus (ibid. 1910, against Loisy); Les Evangiles synoptiques (ibid. 1911, apologetic conferences); Sion, son sanctuaire, son pèlerinage (Nancy 1919). He also collaborated on Revue des sciences ecclésiastiques, Questions ecclésiastiques, DB, Le prêtre, Rev. prat. d'apol., Rev. du clergé français.
