MAYEUC (MAHIEUC, MAHYEUC), YVES. - Dominican bishop of Rennes, b. at Plouvorn (Finistère, in Brittany) in 1462, d. at Bruz (near Rennes) on 20 Sept. 1541.
He took the religious habit in the convent of N.-D. de Bonne Nouvelle at Morlaix (1483). Having completed his studies at Nantes, he was sent to Rennes in 1489. There Duchess Anna of Brittany chose him as her confessor and wished him to accompany her also to the court of France, when she married Carlo VIII (1491) and later Luigi XII (1498), who likewise became M.’s penitents. At the King’s proposal, he was made prior of S. Massimino in Provence in 1504, which he governed through a vicar; and at the Queen’s suggestion he was elected bishop of Rennes (29 Jan. 1507).
Brittany owes its union with the crown of France in large measure to M. But his name is especially linked with his great charity toward his neighbour, which he was able to exercise first as court confessor and almoner, and then during his long episcopate. Numerous miracles took place at his tomb; the beginning of proceedings for the introduction of his cause of beatification dates from 1637.
