MARÍN-SOLA, FRANCISCO. - Dominican theologian, b. at Carcar (Spain) on 22 Nov. 1873, d. at Manila on 5 June 1932. Having landed in the Philippines (17 July 1897) and been ordained a priest on the following 18 Sept., he went as a missionary to the north of the island of Luzon, where he remained for 16 months a prisoner in the hands of the insurgents. Having returned to Manila at the beginning of 1900, he began teaching there at the College of St. John Lateran. Because of his poor health he often changed residence; in 1906 he taught at Avila, shortly afterward again in the Philippines (University of St. Thomas), later in the United States, from 1918 to 1927 at Fribourg

(Switzerland) and from 1929 until his death again at Manila, as dean of the faculty of theology.

His principal work, which aroused sympathies and lively opposition from the time it appeared in a long series of articles in La ciencia tomista (1911-23), is entitled La evolución homogénea del dogma católico (Madrid 1923). M. attempted the solution of other age-old Thomist problems, e.g., concerning physical causality and the reviviscence of the Sacraments, and physical premotion. He collaborated with the Philippine newspaper Liberty, of which he was also for a time the director, and with the Divus Thomas of Fribourg.
