MAZENOD, CHARLES-JOSEPH-EUGÈNE de. - Founder of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, b. at Aix-en-Provence on 1 Aug. 1782, of a noble family, d. at Marseille on 21 May 1861. Although he was an only child, he wished to embrace the ecclesiastical state, saying that his family could not end better than with a priest. Ordained in 1811, he founded in 1816 the “Missionaries of Provence,” later called the “Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate” by Leo XII, who approved their Constitutions in 1926. Appointed, against his will, bishop of Marseille, he nevertheless remained superior general of the Oblates, whom he sent not only here and there in Europe, but also to the foreign missions
