NICORA, LUIGI — Bishop, sociologist, b. Milan 13 Sept. 1829. Ordained in 1852, he served as assistant parish priest until 1882, then as honorary canon (1888) and major penitentiary of the Cathedral.
In 1888 he was elected Bishop of Como, but the government refused the exequatur. NICORA retained the see by papal mandate and died shortly thereafter (27 Nov. 1890). From 1873 to 1883 he collaborated with La scuola cattolica, writing about a hundred articles and studies on the most pressing and vital issues of philosophical, theological, scientific, historical, political and social import. All his activity as writer, preacher and apostle was marked by uncompromising intransigence toward the Church’s and the Pope’s enemies and their false doctrines: he fought political Rosminianism, Masonic liberalism and conciliarists, convinced that any compromise would gravely harm religion.
