NICORA, LUIGI - Bishop, sociologist, b. in Milan on 13 Sept. 1829. Ordained in 1852, he was a parish curate until 1882, then honorary canon (1888) and major penitentiary of the Cathedral.
In 1888 he was elected bishop of Como, but the government refused the exequatur. N. retained the see by the will of the Pope and died shortly afterward (27 Nov. 1890). From 1873 to 1888 he was a contributor to La scuola cattolica, writing about a hundred articles and studies on the most current and vital problems of philosophical, theological, scientific, historical, political and social subject matter. His entire activity as a writer, preacher and apostle was characterized by a firm intransigence toward the enemies of the Church and of the Pope and their false doctrines: he fought political Rominianism, Masonic liberalism and the conciliationists, knowing that any compromise would cause grave harm to religion.
