NOVA ET VETERA. — I. Periodical that first appeared in Rome on 10 January 1908 with the subtitle Riv. quindicinale della Soc. inter. scientifico-religiosa.
Its founder and guiding spirit was Ernesto Bonaiuti, who signed himself Paolo Vinci in II. A journal of modernist polemic and propaganda (v. MODERNISMO), it defined itself as «adogmatic and pragmatist». Immediately repudiated by the Vicar of Rome, Card. Pietro Respighi (decree of 28 January 1908), it came to an end with issue XIX, covering October–December of the same year. The 10 issues of the first semester (nos. 1–12) make up vol. I; the 5 of the second semester (nos. 13–19) make up vol. II, with an index. The reasons for its cessation are given in Commiato, p. 232 of the final issue; in Corriere della Sera of 15 October 1908, which published a statement by Guglielmo Quadrotta; and in L'Avanti! of 31 October, which published a letter by Felice Perroni.
II. The periodical of the same name, a mouthpiece for the purest and most traditional doctrine of the Church of Rome, first appeared in Fribourg, Switzerland, in 1926, with the subtitle: Revue catholique de la Suisse Romande, quarterly. Not published in 1946 for financial reasons, it resumed publication the following year (the 22nd year of the journal), covering the years 1946–47. In 1948, 3 issues were published, and 2 in 1950. From the beginning, its director has been Msgr. Charles Journet of the Major Seminary of Fribourg.
