NOVA ET VETERA. - I. Periodical that first appeared in Rome on 10 Jan. 1908 with the subtitle Riv. quindicinale della Soc. inter. scientifico-religiosa.
Its founder and driving force was Ernesto Bonaiuti, who signed himself there as Paolo Vinci. Modernist in its polemics and propaganda (v. MODERNISMO), the review defines itself as "adogmatic and pragmatist." Immediately disavowed by the Vicar of Rome, Cardinal Pietro Respighi (decree of 28 Jan. 1908), it ended with the 19th issue of Oct.-Dec. of the same year. The 10 issues of the 1st half-year (nos. 1-12) form vol. I, the 5 of the 2nd half-year (nos. 13-19) form vol. II with an index. The reasons for its demise are given in Commiato, on p. 232 of the last issue, in the Corriere della Sera of 15 Oct. 1908, which publishes a statement by Guglielmo Quadrotta, and in L'Avanti! of 31 Oct., which publishes a letter by Felice Perroni.
II. Spokesman of the purest and most traditional doctrine of the Church of Rome, it is the periodical of the same name that first appeared in Fribourg, Switzerland, in 1926, with the subtitle: Revue catholique de la Suisse Romande, quarterly. Not published in 1946 for financial reasons, it resumed the following year (22nd year of the review), covering the years 1946-47. In 1948, 3 issues appeared, 2 in 1950. Its director from the beginning has been Msgr. Charles Journet of the Major Seminary of Fribourg.
