NUMAI, CRISTOFORO. - Cardinal, b. at Forlì, of a noble family, in an unknown year, d. at Ancona on 21 March 1528.
Having entered the Order of Friars Minor, he moved to Paris, where he took his doctorate in theology at the Sorbonne and became a counselor of King Francis I and confessor of Queen Claude. Commissary (1512) and vicar general (1514) of the Order; at the general chapter, convoked by Leo X to settle definitively the question of the juridical existence of the Conventuals and the Observants (May 1517), he was elected minister general of the whole Order, an office he held until July 1518. Cardinal (July 1517), he accepted only at the command of the Pope. He was bishop of Alatri and then also of Isernia (1522). He suffered greatly during the sack of Rome of 1527. Humble and wise, he was a famous preacher.
