ONORATO, VESCOVO DI VERCELLI, SANTO

**ONORATO**, bishop of Vercelli, saint. – He was born around 330 and was a disciple of St Eusebius of Vercelli, whom he followed even into exile, having been driven out by Constantius II after the Council of Milan in 355.

In 396, through the intervention of St Ambrose, he was elected bishop of Vercelli. The following year he assisted the dying St Ambrose and administered the last sacraments to him. He died on 29 October 415 and was buried in the church of St Eusebius, where his tomb, with an inscription, was rediscovered in 1575 alongside those of his predecessors. In the Roman Martyrology he is commemorated on 28 October.
