PACIFICO OF SAN SEVERINO, Saint. - Born at S. Severino (Marche) on March 1, 1653, of the Divini family; died there, in the convent of the Madonna delle Grazie, on Sept. 24, 1721.

After a childhood spent amid the hardships of poverty and the harsh discipline of a maternal uncle, who took him in after the death of his parents, at the age of 17 he became a Franciscan in the convent of Forano. On June 4, 1671, he was ordained a priest; first assigned to the teaching of philosophy, he later turned to the apostolate. But afflicted from as early as 1688 by grave illnesses, he spent the rest of his life in heroic resignation and harsh mortifications, sometimes increased by the lack of understanding of his confreres, and was endowed with the gifts of prophecy and of miracles. After numerous miracles were wrought after his death, in 1786 he was beatified by Pius VI, and on May 26, 1839, Gregory XVI canonized him. Feast day on Sept. 24.
