PASSIONIST NUNS. - Founded by St Paul of the Cross, they had their Rules and Constitutions approved for the first time by Clement XIV in 1770. The first monastery was established at Corneto (now Tarquinia).
They take perpetual simple vows; to the three common vows they add a fourth, to promote devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ, and a fifth, of perfect enclosure. They depend on the Ordinaries of the places. Both in their habit and in their life of penance and prayer they resemble the Passionists, in whose privileges they share. The strict observance of the Rule has always caused holiness to flourish among the P. St Gemma Galgani ardently, but in vain, desired to belong to this Institute. Today there are 23 monasteries of P. in Europe and America, 9 of them in Italy.
