PASSIONISTS, NUNS. — Founded by St Paul of the Cross, they received their Rules and Constitutions approved for the first time by Clement XIV in 1770. The first monastery was erected at Corneto (now Tarquinia).

They take simple perpetual vows; in addition to the three common vows, they add a fourth, to promote devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ, and a fifth, of strict enclosure. They are subject to the local Ordinaries. Both in their habit and in their life of penance and prayer, they resemble the Passionists, with whom they share the same privileges. The strict observance of the Rule has always fostered holiness among them. St Gemma Galgani ardently desired, though in vain, to belong to this Institute. Today there are 23 monasteries of Passionist Nuns in Europe and America, of which 9 are in Italy.
