PASSIONIST SISTERS. - Founded by St. Paul of the Cross, they had their Rules and Constitutions approved for the first time by Clement XIV in 1770. The first monastery was erected at Corneto (today Tarquinia).
They take simple perpetual vows; to the three common ones they add a fourth, of promoting devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ, and a fifth, of perfect enclosure. They depend on the Ordinaries of the places. Both in habit and in their life of penance and prayer they resemble the Passionists, whose privileges they share. The rigid observance of the Rule always caused holiness to flourish among the P. It was to this Institute that St. Gemma Galgani ardently desired, but in vain, to belong. Today there are 23 monasteries of P. in Europe and America, of which 9 are in Italy.
