PETRONAX of MONTECASSINO. — He died at Montecassino on 6 May 1750. He was commissioned by Gregory II to become abbot of the same monastery, to which he had come from his native Brescia, and which he rebuilt and reorganized in 1718 with the help of some Benedictine confrères from Rome and others from S. Vincenzo al Volturno.
Among his most illustrious disciples were the Frankish king Carloman (748) and the Lombard king Ratchis (749). Even Statius of Bavaria, the founder of the abbey of Fulda, wished to spend a year of advanced study under P. He also had the consolation of seeing among his devotees Gisulf II, duke of Benevento, the successor of the ancient destroyer of the monastery, who came to the now-famous abbey to repair the harm done by his ancestor Zotto in 589.
