PETRONACE OF MONTECASSINO. - Died at Montecassino on 6 May 750. At the behest of Gregory II, he was abbot of that same monastery, to which he made a pilgrimage from his native Brescia and which he rebuilt and reorganized in 718, with the help of some Benedictine confreres from Rome and others from St. Vincent al Volturno.
Among his most illustrious disciples he had the Frankish king Carloman (748) and the Lombard king Ratchis (749). The very founder of the abbey of Fulda, St. Sturm of Bavaria, wished to spend a year of further formation with P., who also had the consolation of seeing among his devotees the very successor of the ancient destroyer of the monastery, Gisulf II, duke of Benevento, who came to the by then famous abbey to make amends for the harm done by his ancestor Zotto in 589.
